Mrs. Amber Comp

Hello, and welcome to a new school year at Lyman High School!  I, Amber Comp, am proud to be in my eigth year teaching Science as a part of this amazing school system. I teach Physical Science, Biology, and Bio 2 every year, while alternating Physics and Chemistry every other year.  I graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology and Minors in Chemistry and Psychology in May, 2005, from Briar Cliff University, in Sioux City, IA.  I then went on to perform routine chemical and analytical testing through Natureworks, LLC and Novartis Pharmaceuticals. Following these endeavors, I worked as a clinical research coordinator at the Black Hills Regional Eye Institute. I decided to continue my education and went back to school to obtain my teaching certificate through the Project Select program at Black Hills State University, graduating in May, 2011, and I have finally found a career I am passionate about!

I have lived in Presho, SD, for 7 years. My husband, Jesse, and I have two beautiful children with one on the way. Our daughter is active, creative, and intelligent, and our son is silly, smart, and energetic! Between them we manage to stay pretty busy, but try to find time for things we enjoy, such as watching football, fishing, movies, camping, boardgames, and so much more. In addition, my personal hobbies include fitness through running, biking, and hiking, crafting, reading, and music.

In my courses, students can expect a variety of learning activities to obtain an array of scientific knowledge and develop application and creation skills.  As a teacher, I try to incorporate as much hands-on, engaged learning as possible through projects, posters, and presentations. The students will employ the use of Promethean board and laptop technology, as well as have opportunities for use of the 3R’s in reading, writing, and arithmetic.  Focuses in each unit will be vocabulary, concepts, tests, and oral and written communication through daily assignments.  Students will receive homework assignments a few times a week with the intent that they can be done by the next class period.

If you have questions or concerns feel free to contact me anytime by school phone or email. If you would like to meet in person, I am available from 8:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily, and until 5:00 p.m. by appointment.  I enjoy hearing feedback from students, parents, and the community!  Please view my contact information, so that we may communicate freely throughout the year!
