Mr. (David) Scott Muirhead

Hello, I'm Scott Muirhead.  I have used my middle name, Scott, for my entire life due to the fact that my father’s name was also David (David Francis). I grew up in the Hayes (SD) community, attended rural grade school, and graduated co-valedictorian from Stanley County High School in 1978.

I attended my first year of college at the University of Minnesota on a Navy ROTC scholarship.  I subsequently resigned the scholarship and returned home to attend South Dakota State University (Brookings, SD) where I graduated with honors in 1983.  I participated in THE PRIDE (marching band), symphonic and concert bands, BIG BLUE BRASS (basketball band), brass and jazz ensembles, and orchestra.  I performed at Capers, Cavorts, and played with the pit band for State’s musical production of Grease (in which my younger sister, Crystal, starred as "Rizzo").

I married my wife, Julie Hebbert on June 11, 1983 in her hometown of Scotland, SD.

Julie and I moved to Buffalo, SD where I began my first music education job in August of 1983.  Julie and I spent the next six years with Harding County Schools, collectively teaching elementary, choral, and instrumental music at both the Buffalo site and the various rural (country) schools.

I attended graduate school at South Dakota State during the 1989-90 school year and completed my degree in school administration.  Julie and I returned to Harding County where for the next two years I served as secondary principal/music instructor.  I was dissatisfied with the dual role.

This is my 28th year serving students grades 5-12 in instrumental music at Lyman School.  There were 15 students in high school band that first year (1992-93).  This year there are 43 students in high school band.   There are currently 120 band students in grades 5-12.

I have coached middle school football and wrestling and have assisted the varsity wrestling program from 2003-2010.

My wife, Julie, and I have four children.  Ian is a 2010 Lyman graduate and 2015 Northern State University graduate (Biology). He is currently employed by the National Parks service. Ian will be honored as a Lyman Athletic Hall of Fame member at this year's Mid-Dakota Monster! Sarah is a 2012 Lyman graduate, a 2016 South Dakota State graduate (biology), and is in her final year of veterinary studies at Iowa State University (Ames).  Emily is a junior music education major at USD.  She is clarinet section leader in the 2019 SOUND (USD marching band). Bryson is a senior at Lyman High School.
